Horror Glam

An Interview with Wednesday 13

By Bob Ignizio

A lot of people know Wednesday 13 as lead vocalist for The Murderdolls, the hard rocking band that also includes Slipknot’s Joey Jordison.  But when Slipknot resumed activity, The Murderdolls had to be put on hold.  Not one to sit around and wait for things to happen, Wednesday recruited a new group of musicians to back him on a solo project.  The results could perhaps best be described as “horror glam”, as the band mixes eighties hair metal style riffs with downtuned guitars and morbid lyrics.  Wednesday’s debut album was recently released through Roadrunner records, and since then he’s been on the road playing gigs in support of it whenever and wherever he can.  While in transit from one town to another, Wednesday managed to find a few minutes to chat with Utter Trash.

Utter Trash:  How’s the tour going so far?
Wednesday 13:  Cool.  So far everything’s good.

UT:  Why did you decide to go out on your own after being in The Murderdolls?
W13:  Everyone took a break, and rather than sit on my ass at home I decided to go out and do something.

UT:  Is the Murderdolls over, or do you think you might go back to that again?
W13:  The whole thing with that is we just went on a hiatus.  As long as Joey is playing in Slipknot, The Murderdolls can never be a full time thing.  We all knew it was going to come to an end at some point, so everybody else just started doing their own thing in the meantime.  When it comes back to time to do that again, we’ll cross that bridge.  We’ll see what happens.  The door’s not closed.

UT:  How would you say your solo stuff differs from The Murderdolls?
W13:  It’s definitely not the same stuff.  It’s a different atmosphere on both the record and in the live show, as well.  The Murderdolls is more of a collaboration, and this project is 100% my own vision.  But I think it really takes the live show to see the major differences between this and The Murderdolls.

UT:  Unlike a lot of horror themed bands, you have a bit of a glam rock influence.  Are you a big fan of eighties bands like Poison?
W13:  Yeah, I always have been.  My whole image and the things I do stems from bands like Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, and Twisted Sister.

UT:  Since grunge came along, it seems like a lot of bands take themselves really seriously.  You think audiences are ready to have some fun again?
W13:  I sure hope so.  I’m definitely having fun with what I’m doing.  I don’t try to think about real life subjects.

UT:  You’re touring on your own right now.  Any plans to hook up with a bigger band and go out in a support slot?
W13:  Yeah, that’s something we’re looking into right now.  We’ll see what happens.

UT:  What would you say draws you to the horror element in what you do?
W13:  It’s just always been a part of what I do, something I’m into.

UT:  Any horror movies that are personal favorites?
W13:  Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Night of the Living Dead.  A lot of them.

UT:  Any interest in being in a horror film or directing one?
W13:  Yeah, I’d love to get into that later on, when and if it happens.
