Electric Frankenstein
with Amps II Eleven and The Professional Againsters
The Lime Spider
11-20-04
Even if I hadn’t been at the Slayer show the night
before, I would have still gone to see EF at Akron’s Lime Spider rather than
the closer to home Peabody’s. Nothing against Peabody’s, but I just really
enjoy the atmosphere at The Spider. Not to mention the great selection of
beers. Man does not live by Bud and PBR alone, people. But I digress.
Anyway, The Professional Againsters got things
started. These guys are one of my favorites on the local scene. They’ve
lost a guitar player since last I saw them, but vocalist Dan Halen has ably
filled that slot. The band also had a number of songs that were new to me,
including the great sing along “Bring Me the Head of Radiohead”. A few of
the older tunes sounded a bit shaky in spots, as if maybe the band hasn’t
practiced them much recently, but overall it was a fun set.
Next up was another band I like a lot, Cleveland’s Amps
II Eleven. As always their set was super energetic and loud as they tore
through numbers like “Gas, Grass, or Ass”, “Waste of a Pretty Face” and “My
Life is Shit (But Hey, Thanks for Asking)“. To be perfectly honest, I’d say
Amps’ set was the highlight of the show.
Not that Electric Frankenstein weren’t great in their
own way. This was EF’s 13th Anniversary tour, but despite their
longevity and influence, I had never heard them before. That’s my loss, as
the band plays some great no-bullshit rock n roll. As I said, I’ve never
head Electric Frankenstein before so I don’t know what they played (other
than covers, like AC/DC’s “High Voltage”). All I know is it sounded pretty
good, so I’ve got some catching up to do with this band. (Bob Ignizio)
