The Intelligent Knives with Human Caveman and Kill the Hippies

The Lime Spider

For starters, you’ve gotta’ love a free show.  This little shindig was sponsored by the fine folks at Square Records, namely my brother and Utter Trash contributor Dave Ignizio, his wife Juniper Sage, and their friend and business partner Jeff Crowe.  Family ties aside, this was a solid line-up of diverse bands, making for a pleasant way to spend the infamous “biggest bar night of the year”.   A fairly decent sized crowd decided to do their pre-holiday imbibing at the Spider while enjoying some good original local music.

Human Caveman got things off to a good start.  This relatively new band is made up of Robbie Vegas on bass and vocals, formerly of Radar Secret Service and Sexual Tension, former Sexual Tension drummer Scott, and an excellent female keyboard player I’m not familiar with.  The trio had a very interesting sound that at times reminded me of Oingo Boingo, The Talking Heads, Devo, various Mike Patton projects, Primus, and other quirky, highly talented combos.  If that sounds like your thing, get out and see this band.  I know I plan to catch them again.

Kent’s Kill the Hippies have been around the scene for some time now in various configurations, but they still play with the energy of a new band with something to prove.  Their sound reminds me of the sort of bands that Alternative Tentacles were releasing in the late eighties and early nineties, and for their last song they even covered the Crucifucks classic “Hinckley Had a Vision”.  That alone would have won me over, but the band’s originals were excellent as well.

Intelligent Knives play dub music, and they play it quite well.  Unfortunately, while my musical tastes are fairly broad and far ranging, they just don’t include this particular style.  For those wondering what the hell dub music is, it’s sort of like reggae with lots of echo.  There’s no denying this band’s talent, but I just don’t have much interest in what they’re doing.  Don’t let that turn you off if you like this sort of thing, though.  Most of the crowd seemed to like the Knives just fine.  (Bob Ignizio)
