Sepultura, Voi Vod, and Full Blown Chaos

The Odeon

05-13-03

There weren’t too many people at The Odeon when Full Blown Chaos played their set.  Wish I would have shown up late as well.  FBC is another bunch of beefy mad guys playing testosterone soaked generic hardcore.  The Hatebreed T-shirt worn by the drummer pretty much says it all.  Too intense for me?  Hardly.  Just boring.  Most of the crowd seemed to agree, showing very little enthusiasm for the band’s brief set.

All the smart people started showing up around 8:30, and by the time Voi Vod went on at 8:45 The Odeon was pretty well populated.  It was great to see Snake back in the band, and he seemed to really be enjoying himself.  The band opened with their signature tune “Voi Vod” and then dove into the new stuff with “Rebel Robot” and “Gasmask Revival”.  Next up was “Panorama” from the ‘Angel Rat’ album, and then a couple more new ones.  This pattern of one classic followed by two new songs continued for most of the set.  “The Unknown Knows” from ‘Nothingface’ and “The Prow” from ‘Angel Rat’ were probably the highlights of the show for me, but new songs like “The Multiverse” and “Les Cigares Volants” kicked ass, too.    The band ended their set too early for my tastes with “Tribal Convictions” , “We Carry On”, and “Astronomy Dominie”.  Overall it was a good show marred only by the fact that Jason Newstead’s bass was way too loud in the mix.   A few more old songs would have been nice, too.

Sepultura have always been one of those bands who I like a few songs by but don’t really get excited over.  Nonetheless I have to say they sounded awesome.  This was my first exposure to the band’s current lead singer, former Clevelander Derrick Green.  As far as I’m concerned he’s every bit as good as Max was, I just don’t like the direction this band has been going in since ‘Chaos A.D.’.  I stuck around for about 5 songs, including a pretty cool cover version of Hellhammer’s “Messiah”.   Again I have to say the band sounded great (no mix problems for their set) but I had my fill pretty quickly.  As for the rest of the crowd they seemed pretty into the show and I didn’t see too many other early departures.  (Bob Ignizio)
