Zeke and Camarosmith
The Grog Shop
05-12-03
There were probably about 50 people at this show, not
too bad a crowd for a Monday night in Cleveland. This was Zeke’s farewell
tour and the opening band Camarosmith is the new band for Zeke’s rhythm
section.
I hadn’t heard Camarosmith prior to their performance
this evening, but what I heard was good enough to warrant picking up the
band’s CD at the merch table. Vocalist Ben had described their sound to me
before the show as “seventies arena rock” and that’s pretty much accurate.
They reminded me in particular of early Grand Funk Railroad (before they
went pop with songs like “We’re an American Band”), Sabbath, and The Nuge,
with a touch of southern rock. They did a cool cover of Spinal Tap’s
“Tonight I’m Gonna’ Rock You (Tonight)” but their own material was as
entertaining if not more so.
As mentioned earlier this was Zeke’s farewell tour. I
always liked this band and it’s a shame to see them leaving the scene. They
played a good mix of older and newer, blazing fast and midtempo songs. Even
their speed of light numbers are catchy, though, and like Camarosmith
there’s a touch of southern rock flavoring their sound. Probably the
closest comparison would be with The Supersuckers, but more punk sounding.
The highlight for me was when the played “God of GSXR”, probably my favorite
tune of theirs. Their 45 minute set was tight as hell and lots of fun.
