The Nimrods with Sky
Chief
The Lime Spider
05-03-03
Skychief, the band that opened this show, weren’t bad
but they didn’t really distinguish themselves either. Pretty much generic
pop punk. The band did play a couple of songs near the end of their set
that were a little more adventurous and interesting than the majority of
their material, but it wasn’t enough to win me over. And the lame attempts
at ironic humor at the expense of Iron Maiden didn’t exactly endear them to
me either.
The Nimrods didn’t need to stoop to such tactics.
Their material, juvenile though it often is, stands on its own. And with so
many bands these days trying to be serious to the point that they sap all
the fun out of rock ‘n’ roll, a little infantile humor is a much needed
breath of fresh air. The band’s set was pretty similar to their last
reunion show. Displaying a pop sensibility while still maintaining a punk
rock edge, the band made their way through favorites like “Boner”, “Too Lazy
for Anarchy”, “New Sensation”, and “Caught” (about the perils of leaving the
door unlocked when taking a little “private time” for oneself). The theme
for the band’s set this evening was “all beered up”, and indeed The Nimrods
and most of the crowd were. Although their copious intake of alcohol
probably contributed to some of the screwing around between songs, it had no
adverse affects on the band’s playing ability. These guys are pros, and the
40 oz. bottles of Miller High Life sharing stage space with the band members
are simply the tools of their trade, the fuel that makes this particular
rock ‘n’ roll machine run. In addition to the aforementioned originals, the
band also tackled John Cougar Mellencap’s “Authority Song” and Men at
Work’s “Overkill”. The bass player smashed his bass on the next to
last song, taking out Dan Halen’s guitar cable in the process. The band
nonetheless finished off with G. G. Allin’s “Drink Fight and Fuck”, albeit a
somewhat thinner sounding version than usual. (Bob Ignizio)
