Annihilation Time with Midnight
Pat’s in the Flats
05-02-05
It was the beginning of May, which for those of us
living in Northeast Ohio is the last month of winter. Okay, maybe it wasn’t
quite that bad, but this was one of those days where the temperature
was right at that point where you can go through every kind of precipitation
in the span of ten minutes. And that’s exactly what it was like driving to
Pat’s in the Flats to catch an early show by local metal god Midnight and
California punks Annihilation Time.
The mysterious masked Midnight (who some claim is Jamie
Walters of Boulder and Destructor fame, though none who have actually peered
behind Midnight’s mask have lived to tell about it) made his entrance to
Pat’s carrying a flaming upside down cross. He then strapped on his axe and
played a short set of blistering black metal with only a pre-recorded
backing tape as accompaniment. I can only assume the musicians that backed
Midnight when I saw him play last Halloween have since been sacrificed to
the lords of Hell.
After a short break, Annihilation Time came on and
lived up to their name. The band sounded great, turning in rock solid
renditions of songs from their two albums, but the Pat’s PA wasn’t quite up
to the task of making the vocals audible over the instrumental roar. Still,
it was an impressive display of rock prowess that seemed to satisfy the
crowd. If you haven’t picked up any of this band’s CDs, correct that
oversight as soon as possible. They deserve to be huge.
