The Church of the Subgenius Devival with Man, Inc., Serrated Edge, Lonesome Cowboy Dave, The Amino Acids, The Rev. Ivan Stang, Rev. Nikki Deathchick, and Rev. Carter LeBlanc

The Beachland Ballroom

05-22-04

I think I may have missed the very beginning of the devival while in transit between the Twisted Spine Micro Film Fest and The Beachland.  However, when I arrived, The Reverend Ivan Stang had just taken the podium to begin his major rant of the evening.  As usual, the rant skipped around from subject to subject, but more or less focused on how gurus are full of shit.  Stang used the term “Gaia-rhea” to describe the pronouncements of various new age types, and asserted that most of the people who go around talking about “enlightenment” are more in love with the idea of being “aware” than with actually being aware.

Lonesome Cowboy Dave, formerly of Einstein’s Secret Orchestra, was the first musical act as far as I could tell.  Dave’s a fine guitar slinger and vocalist, and he had a good band assembled to back him up.  That said, I definitely miss ESO.

Reverend Nikki Deathchick took over preaching duties next, talking about “false conspiracy guilt”.  Apparently the best way to exorcise conspiracy guilt demons is to have Nikki give you a good spanking, and a few audience members came on stage to be healed by Nikki’s firm hand.

A Dead Milkmen tribute band?  Sounded like fun.  Unfortunately, Serrated Edge were horribly out of tune and sloppy.  The real Milkmen may not have been virtuoso players, but they always sounded good live.  Luckily, their set was short.

Making up for Serrated Edge’s lackluster set was Man, Inc.  Man, Inc. is just one guy playing a bass drum, a fuzzed out electric bass, and singing.  Looking quite conservative dressed in a suit and tie, Man, Inc. was anything but.  Songs like “Beer for Man” and “Hippy Down” were as raging as any four piece punk band.  But “Fired” was definitely the song that went down best with the crowd.  If you haven’t heard this guy yet, go to his website now and download a few MP3s.  Then buy his disc.

Regretfully, I did not stick around long after Man’s set.  Between the film fest earlier and a couple hours worth of preachin’ and rockin’ at the Devival, I was pretty beat.  I left just as Rev. Carter LeBlanc was starting his rant.  I bumped into Rev. Stang at the Hessler Street Fair the next day, and he mentioned that LeBlanc’s rant had been spectacular.  I also missed The Amino Acids, who I’ve heard good things about.  (Bob Ignizio)
