 Cut to the Chase

An interview with Lil’ Pocket Knife

By Eddie Fleisher

l to r:  Lil' Pocket Knife, No Skills, and George Patterson.

Lil’ Pocket Knife is a genre defying band from San Francisco.  They mix elements of electronica, rap, and punk rock to create a fun and unique sound.  Recently, Utter Trash writer Eddie Fleisher had the chance to interview the band, which consists of Lil’ Pocket Knife herself (aka Kristy Geschwandtner, vocals), No Skills (aka Lynae Burns, drums) and George Patterson (keytar), who clearly needs to get himself a pseudonym.

Utter Trash:  What were your influences as a kid?
Lil’ Pocket Knife: UFO Sightings and Nirvana.
George Patterson:Taylor Ham and the fear of the New Jersey Devil.
No Skills: ‘Best of Bread’.

UT: If you had to pick one album, and one only, to take with you to a desert island, what would it be?
GP: ‘Music on a Long Thin Wire’.
LP: Andrew WK – ‘I Get Wet’.
NS: Besides ‘Best of Bread’?

UT: The artwork on the album is cool, how did you get hooked up with artist Keren Richter?
LP: I met her through a friend. She totally Rules. Her art is better than our album.

UT: Where did the name Lil Pocket Knife come from?
GP: Kristy can cut like a knife, but not very deeply, and she is very practical like a toothpick and crafty like a pair of scissors.

UT: Before doing this, what other projects were you in?
NS: Nothing-I got no skills.
GP: Knodel.
LP: KIT and Warbler.

UT: What's the San Francisco scene like? Do they support a lot of diverse music, such as yours?
LP: You can do anything here and people will support you. It is AMAZING.

UT: There seems to be a lot of different styles on your record ‘Pants Control’.  Does that make it harder or easier to find an audience?
LP: We are bewildered that we even have an audience at all.
NS: We have no style.

UT: Your lyrics deal a lot with parties and disco dancing.  Do you believe music has gotten too serious?
GP: We aren’t serious people, so we don’t make serious music. It wouldn’t be very serious of us to do so.  Serious people mostly make serious music. Which is good, because serious music is often funny.

UT: My girlfriend is a stylist, who loves your record.  She plays it for everyone she cuts hair for. The response always seems to be positive.  Are you encountering positive responses to the record so far?
LP: People either really hate it or really love it.
NS: We are encouraged by positive stylists.

UT: When will you release a full length record?
NS: Soon, we are working on it. There will be more singing. Please tell Narnack to send us money.

UT: I just got the release from supergroup Revenge, the ‘Welcome To The Party’ record, which features Lil Pocket Knife.  How did that come about?
LP: Eric and Noel had an 8 year old singing in their band and were planning a tour in Japan. The 8 year old couldn't go to Japan due to an early bedtime, so they asked me to sing and tour instead.

UT: Do George and Lynae get mad that Kristy gets to be Lil Pocket Knife?  Like I'm sure the dudes from Marilyn Manson got mad that it was named after him?
NS: We are happy to be George and No Skills.

UT: When are you touring, and are you coming out to Cleveland?
GP: Only if you buy us all toasted cheese and peanut butter sandwiches from Tommy's.
NS: Can we stay at your house?
