Not too bad a crowd for a Monday night show, but
considering it was ex New York Doll Sylvain Sylvain playing it should have
been bigger. The Chrome Kickers went on first, playing a typically fine set
of punk rock. They were probably a bit loud for the venue, and feedback was
a bit of a problem, but overall still a good show from these guys.
The Kill City Kills were up next playing late
sixties/early seventies style hard rock with bluesy overtones. They were
just raw and garagey sounding enough to fit on this bill, with a sound
somewhere between early Grand Funk Railroad and The MC5. Good songs, too.
Sylvain Sylvain started his hour plus set with the
rousing instrumental “The Cops are Coming”. His set drew from his days with
the New York Dolls, his own solo material, and some of Sylvain’s late Dolls
bandmate Johnny Thunders solo material. Highlights included Pills, Trash,
Personality Crisis, and “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” and a
cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale”. Overall is was a laid
back, casual sort of show with Sylvain talking to the crowd quite a bit.
Much of the stage banter was unkind comments directed towards ex-Dolls
vocalist David “Buster Poindexter” Johansen. Sylvain’s guitar work was
excellent, and while his vocals weren’t anything to write home about they
were adequate. When the guy working Syl’s merch table came on stage to sing
a few songs the energy level jumped noticeably. Overall a good show from
one of punk’s founding fathers and well worth the very low cover. (Bob
