Amps II Eleven with The
A-10s and The Subtones
The Hi Fi Club
May 28, 2004
I haven’t been to the Hi Fi club since this place was
the Blind Lemon. Not for any particular reason, mind you. As far as live
music venues go, it’s actually pretty nice. Much less of a dingy hole than
a lot of places, but not so nice that it feels strange catching a triple
bill of rock there.
The Subtones, aka Marky Ramone’s back-up band, played
first. Their original songs are much more in synch with the “seventies rock
on steroids” sound of headliners Amps II Elven than they are with the
Ramones material the band often plays. There was a rumor that Marky might
stop by to sit in with the band, but that didn’t happen. They were joined
by a guest vocalist for a few Ramones songs, though. The band sounded
great, but at an hour, their set was a bit long for an opener.
The A-10s were up next. They delivered an energetic
set of high octane rawk that was about half as long as the opener’s. I’m
not sure, but I think the A-10s are fairly new to the scene. They handled
themselves on stage like veterans, though. They put on a very entertaining,
professional show and complimented the other bands nicely.
It’s been a while since I last saw Amps II Eleven
play. I already liked them before, but tonight they sounded especially
good. I don’t know if it was the mix, or if vocalist Matt Wroth has been
working on his singing, but his singing stood out a lot more this night than
it has in the past. Whatever the case, it was for the better. I’d put Amps
on the short list of Cleveland hard rock bands that have the potential to go
national. They definitely put on as good a live show as any band currently
on the scene. (Bob Ignizio)
