The Chrome Kickers, The Jacknife
Powerbombs, and The Antisocialists
The Beachland Tavern
07-25-03
This was the third show in as many days for me, and despite being nearly
dead on my feet form lack of sleep it was the most fun. The
Antisocialists haven't played out in several months, and you could tell
they've been practicing. Although the band has been working on some
new material, they stuck to older songs like "The Peace Keepers" and "Bombs
of Oklahoma" this evening. Completely abandoning journalistic
integrity, I joined the band to sing The Dead Kennedys' "Moon Over Marin"
which was a blast. Bass player Pat's brother also came on stage to add
second guitar to a couple of tunes. Most of the crowd seemed to be on
their side tonight, so the hard work must have paid off.
Allergic to Whores were supposed to play next, but they were a no-show.
Apparently they had a gig at The Pirates Cove the same evening. Don't
know if they thought they could make both. or if they just decided to blow
this one off, so I'll refrain from passing judgment. That meant The Jacknife Powerbombs were up next, and they
turned in a typically solid performance. They played "Shooting Star
Samurai" for the first time in a while, their two new originals "Get While
the Gettings Good" and "Red Blooded", Kiss' "God of Thunder", and the all
the rest of the usual stuff. These guys always go over well with a
crowd, and tonight was no exception.
Do I still have to tell you people how good The Chrome Kickers are?
Apparently so, because there weren't nearly enough of you in the club when
they hit the stage. That didn't matter, though. Those who were
there actually allowed themselves to have a good time. No standing
with their arms crossed bullshit, most of the folks in the Beachland were
right up front screaming along and occasionally breaking out in circle
dancing. The Kickers rewarded the crowd's enthusiasm by playing their
asses off, going about twenty minutes longer than planned to make up for the
MIA Allergic to Whores. In addition to all their originals, they
pulled out a few cover tunes like "Shit Called Love", "Bodies", and "Ain't
it Fun" that they haven't played in a long time.
