Kill the Hippies, Shark Pants, and The
Shrill
Grilly's
07-15-04
There hasn't been live entertainment at Grillys since
it opened in 1911. That all changed on July 15th with this excellent
bill of punk rock.
First up was The Shrill, a horror rock band featuring
Lords of the Highway drummer Pete Yorko on lead vocals and guitar, and
Lords' bass player Sugar on cockatail drum. Yes, the singular spelling
is correct, although she did have two cymbals. Rounding out the band
was Jimbo from The Yokels on bass. The band had a vsound that mixed
rockabilly, garage rock, and full on punk rock.
Next up was Shark Pants from Tuscon, Arizona.
These guys were just straight up no bullshit punk. Nothing fancy, but
damn good. The trio tore through a punishing half hour set that even
impressed some of the non-punk regulars at the bar.
Kill the Hippies closed out the show with a typically
excellent set. They are without a doubt one of the best and most
original punk rock bands in Northeast Ohio. Almost every song is
memorable, and their sets don't sound like 30 minutes of the same song.
