Abdullah with Orodruin and Centrifuge

The Phantasy Niteclub

01-09-04

I hadn’t seen a live rock show in about a month, so I was definitely jonesin’ for some rock.  Luckily for the most part these three bands delivered just what I needed.  Despite the extremely cold weather, a fair number of other rock fans turned out to get their fix as well.  Just about everyone stayed for all three bands, too.

Centrifuge started things off with a set of painfully slow dirges that reminded me a bit of Godflesh.  The songs were long, repetitive, and punishing and the vocalist has a versatile voice that can handle melodic singing and death growling equally well.  Not really my favorite flavor of metal, but the band went over well with most of the crowd.

Rochester, New York’s doom metal band Orodruin were a last minute addition to the bill.  It was a pleasant surprise, since I had interviewed this band some time ago and heard (and enjoyed) their ‘Epicurean Mass’ CD.  This was my first time catching them live, and I wasn’t disappointed.   Their songs were probably just as long as anything Centrifuge played, but Orodruin keep things from getting boring with good arrangements and dynamics.  Fans of Candlemass and Black Sabbath should definitely dig this band’s sound.

Abdullah started out as a doom metal band themselves on their self titled debut CD.  Since then, however, they’ve mutated considerably.  Although they did pull out their old doom chestnut “The Path to Enlightenment”, the emphasis was on newer, faster songs like “Black Helicopters” and “Burning Away”.  There were also a bunch of songs I’m not familiar with yet, including a couple that showed a Misfits influence.  The band closed their set with a raging version of Metallica’s “Whiplash”.   (Bob Ignizio)
