Party of Helicopters, The Y, Radar
Secret Service, and Sexual Tension
The Lime Spider
01-30-03
This was just a great all around rock show.
Gainesville, Florida’s The Y were ostensibly the headliners, but The Spider
was packed with enthusiastic music fans for all four sets. Aside from The
Y, the rest of the bands were all from Kent, OH. Based on the show this
evening, I’d say the state of Kent’s music scene is strong and diverse.
Sorry I’m not familiar enough with any of these bands to give song titles.
First up was Sexual Tension. They performed a set of
groove oriented punk rock with vocals that resembled a less grating version
of The Crucifucks Doc. Their material overall was strong, with lots of
energy shown by the whole band. Special mention has to go out to their 18
year old singer who was all over the stage as well as frequently off it.
Radar Secret Service has been doing their thing for
about 6 years now. To my ears they sound like a mix of Fugazi, Sonic Youth,
and eighties alternative with soulful vocals ala The Makeup. Their music
was complex but rockin’. Compared to Sexual Tension they seemed a little
laid back on stage but that’s ok as long as the music’s good, which in this
case it was.
Although I’m guessing most of the crowd showed up for
the local bands, that didn’t stop them from showing their appreciation for
The Y. This 3 piece dirty rock band from down south did a good job kicking
out the jams. They were a bit generic at times, but I have to say they
delivered an enjoyable performance.
Party of Helicopters recently got themselves signed to
fairly big indie Velocette records, and it’s not hard to see why. They’ve
got the talent, they’ve got the stage presence, and they’ve got the songs.
Overall I’d describe them as sounding like a psychedelic version of The
Afghan Wigs. Loud as hell, too. Gotta’ remember those earplugs next time.
It was also nice to see that almost the whole crowd stuck around until the
end of the show.
