The Totally Wired/The Lords of the Highway

Annabell’s/The Outpost

01-30-04

It’s been a while since I tried to do the two shows in one night thing, but this seemed like a good opportunity.  My wife just loves being out in sub-zero temperatures, so she came along as well.  I thought we’d be able to catch two acts at Annabell’s, but unfortunately The Chrome Kickers cancelled out at the last minute so The Totally Wired had their start time pushed back.  I didn’t really know what to expect from this band soundwise, but it turned out they made a pretty good opening act for the second show I’d be catching this night.

The Totally Wired could best be described as sixties garage psych.  I’m not as much an expert on that era as I’d like to be, so I’m not really sure how much of the band’s set was original and how much was covers.  Either way they rocked.  Although both guitar players took turns playing leads, the flight suit wearing Matt especially caught my attention with his mastery of effects and feedback.  The vocals could have been a bit louder in the mix, but otherwise this was an excellent set.  I’ll definitely want to check these guys out again.

After the Totally Wired, we ran back out to the car and hopped on I-76 to race  to the Outpost in Kent.  The Lords were a few songs into their set when we arrived, but nowhere close to being done.  They played a slew of songs from their 2 most recent albums, ‘Haulin’ Ass’ and ‘Lost in Sin’, a few cover tunes, and a handful of brand new songs.  Despite having consumed a fair amount of alcohol throughout their set, the band never let things get sloppy.  Just another amazing show from this band, all in a night’s work.  Unless you hate having fun, you really should get out and see this band live.

My apologies to Dropgun at Annabell’s and Kill the Hippies and Billy & the Bullets at The Outpost for not catching their sets.  Dropgun and KTH I’ve covered in the past, and I thoroughly enjoy both bands.  Billy & The Bullets I’ve haven’t seen, but heard lots of folks commenting on how good they were at The Outpost so I’ll have to check ‘em out in the future.
