The Brazen Rogues with Underground Network and The Jacknife Powerbombs

The Pirate's Cove

01-24-04

This was the most packed local show I've been to in some time.  There were about 100 people shoe horned into the closet that is The Pirates Cove with probably 50 more milling about in the hallway that the Cove shares with Peabody’s.  You could say it was because of all the free tickets that had been given away, but on an unpleasant Cleveland winter night like this one, people aren’t going to leave the comfort of home to see a band play unless they actually like them.

Sporting a new guitarist and drummer and a bunch of new songs since the last time I saw them, The Jacknife Powerbombs sounded better than ever.  They’ve cut down on the speed a little bit and the newer tunes show more attention being paid to songwriting.  It ain’t no sell-out, just a band reaching their full potential.

Underground Network sounded pretty good, too.  They have sort of a modern punk sound with lots of melodic guitar leads, backing vocals, and catchy choruses.  They were a little too poppy for my tastes, but for a band that hasn’t been around all that long they sounded tight and carried themselves well on stage.

The crowd was getting themselves quite worked up waiting for the headliners, even chanting the band’s name.  The Brazen Rogues finally hit the stage at about midnight and, as the pit suddenly burst into action, I moved my decrepit old ass out into the hallway.  The Rogues had been fun but a bit sloppy last time I saw them.  Tonight they sounded much tighter, perhaps due to their new drummer.  They played several straight forward working class punk anthems from their CD ‘Shamelessly Bold Scoundrels’ (“Crazy”, “Circle Pit”, and “I Hate You” among others) but threw in a few new ones and covers of The Misfits (“Hybrid Moments”), The Proclaimers (“500 Miles”), and to close their set, The Rolling Stones (“Paint it Black”).  The band definitely gave 100%, and the crowd gave it right back to them.

The Gluttons were scheduled to play last.  They are an excellent band, but unfortunately I couldn’t stick around to catch them this time.
