An Interview With Robert Vinterland of Beseech

By Taliesin Govannon

Back Row: Daniel Elofsson, Jonas Stromberg Middle Row: Lotta Hoglin, Mikel Black, Robert Vinterland Front: Erik Molarin

In the continuing flood of great Scandinavian hard rock bands, Beseech is seeking to break out of the pack with a unique and distinctive style far different from their black metal compatriots. The fact that many of you have never heard this band is a shame, because they released one of the best albums of 2004 (in my opinion). Recently I had a chance to ask some questions of guitarist Robert Vinterland.

Taliesin Govannon: The Beseech sound has been very fluid, with no two albums sounding alike. Is that a conscious decision, or just a result of the evolution of the individual members?
Robert Vinterland:
I think there are an natural evolution and exploration in Beseech that made every album unique, but there have also been some line-up changes that of course affected the music in some ways. For me as a main composer in Beseech I always want to try out new things but musically and for the entire sound to get my ego what it want.

TG: I remember getting an e-mail from the street team asking for help finishing a video. Did that ever get done?
RV:
The thing is that I think Napalm did a mistake to not help out to finance the video at least for the US release of DRAMA that were about 6 months later than in Europe. The video supposed to be animated and we filmed all member parts on blue-screen so we could be in the virtual environment and everything was on going until 2 of 3 animators jumped off of the project of different reasons (personally) so we could not continue with it and therefore we asked on the web for animators that wanted do it. We got some offers but nothing we felt was 100% right when we did see some things they've done as previous work. So we are stuck with all the blue-screen material on a big hard drive. does any 3D guru read this please contact us at info@beseech.net.

TG: One of Beseech's strengths is the wildly divergent musical influences the members bring to the band. Are there any musicians that everyone in the group enjoys?
RV:
It's really different what we like for kind of music in the band, I listen to almost everything from 60's to modern music (pop, rock, synth/electronic, all kinds of metal etc) but the thing I put on mostly are movie music that contain all kinds of elements and moods. But we all are pretty open minded so we don't have a hard time to choose music that all like in the band, but I can't think of any particular right now.

TG: How's work on the new album coming along? Will you be working with producer Christian Silver again?
RV:
Yes, we actually already began to work on some new material in the same studio (Studiomega) with Christian Silver so it feels really good as he are one of the most underrated engineers/producers out there and we really get along with him and believe in his ideas.

TG: Are there any plans to tour the US anytime soon?
RV:
Nothing are planned at this moment but we of course would love to get over there and meet the Americans, it would be a dream come true for all members of Beseech. So help us out to spread the name and promote the band in the way you think would work or like! Visit our homepage at www.beseech.net where you get the latest information about the band.

TG: I've heard terms like "gothic" and "doom" used to describe Beseech's sound, and yet "Drama" seems to transcend easy labels. How would you describe the band?
RV:
I (as all other that play in a band) think it's very hard to put a label on your own music, but I create music when I'm in different moods and emotions and in my case the music could turn to a be in a complete different style than another I made days ago. I don't really care about the style, the important is that it turning out to be a good song and that's a trademark of Beseech for those that want to get into something more interesting and get along on the exploration of music.

TG: As a singer myself, I know just how difficult it can be to get lead singers to play nice and get along! How do Lotta and Erik manage it?
RV: As all bands there are discussion about things and you can be pissed on someone for a short while but we have been through so many crises so we could be a therapist for a band in crisis. But I honestly never seen or heard Lotta and Erik argued with each others, they are soul mates as friends and are a real team that support each others as we all do in the band. There are no competition between them as I noticed, whos's gonna sing lead on a song or not as the important thing is that the song turns out as good as possible and that it goes along with the lyrics and emotions. We not using both just to do it, we always have a thought about it and some songs does not need both at all to create the feeling we want.

TG:Is there anything else you'd like to add?
RV:
