Self Sufficient

An interview with Autonomy

By Mike Salamone

Utter Trash:  When did Autonomy come together, and who’s in the band?
Daev Id: Autonomy was formed in December of 2002. The founding members were myself, R.Sulli, and Mark Cassidy. After much chaos and heartache, the line up stabilized at what it is currently: Daev Id (bass), Mark Cassidy (vocals), Doctor M (guitar), Titus Corpus Dillecti (guitar), R. Sulli (drums) and Lilith Regan (vocals).

UT:  How would you describe your musical style?
DI:   Musically, we set out to create our own particular brand of frenetic, driving, edgy modern hard rock. We didn't consciously set out to pattern ourselves after any particular genre, nor did we preclude the possibility of ending up as any particular genre.
Dr. M: A mix of post punk, death metal/grindcore, and pop from the 60's, 70's, 80's.

UT:  What sort of ideas are you trying to express in your lyrics?
DI:   I write about the human condition as I experience and see it.  Politically, I'm an independent with Libertarian leanings who values individuality; a bit of a Christian existentialist, perhaps. A recurring theme in our lyrics is man’s alienation from himself, and the erosion of individuality by the tides of conformity and collectivism plaguing our civilization. Some of the songs deal with slightly more intimate topics such as relationships and addiction.
Mark Cassidy:  Daev has been writing the lyrics so far.  Now that we have a good, stable line-up, everyone will be able to start writing songs to be put in the set list.

UT:  Has your demo been getting any airplay?
DI:   I know 91.1 has played our demo, and we've sent it to other stations in the area and around the world, but I can't verify who's playing it and where.

UT:  What sort of responses have you been getting to your live shows?
DI:   We've been incredibly well received by audiences.  However, being a perfectionist at heart, I see areas of opportunity were we can further hone our performances.
R. Sulli:  Audience response, in my opinion, has been outstanding.  I’ve seen all walks and ages find a groove with us.

UT:  What bands have you shared shows with?
DI:   We've played with: Disown, Dope ,Madison East, Element 92, Teen Spirit, Chaos in Creation, Shenoah, The Firmary, Ten Count Fall, Crystal Method, Civil Funk, Untitled, Torn, Shallow End, Into All the Earth, ABoys Will, Fast Mattress, Whiskey City, Keller Hanna, Kora Adalai, and a few more I can't recall at the moment.

UT:  What would you do if you were President of the United States?
DI:   President Daev Id would: abolish NAFTA and GATT, close the borders, expel all illegal aliens, make individual gun ownership mandatory, return to the gold standard, pull the U.S. out of the U.N., place a cross and the ten commandments in every public building, replace the current tax system with a 10% flat rate, and institute a “Star Wars” strategic defense program.
RS:  Hold a press conference to introduce the band Autonomy to the U.S.
DM:  Make our borders airtight and bring our soldiers back home.
MC:  Who knows? It depends on what's fucked up at that time.

UT:  How can people reach you?
DI:   We can be reached through our website www.autonomy.rocks.it.  There's a link to our e-mail there.
