Ah, a good
old-fashioned scumrock release, the likes of which I haven’t heard in a while.
Of course any band of this genre is going to get compared to the Mentors and/or
GG Allin – and this isn’t up to those high standards (But who is?). Nor is it
even as stupidly genius and rocking as a band like Kill Allen Wrench. But still
quite a bit ahead of most new bands trying their hands at this sort of thing.
My copy came in a plain white sleeve, so no comments on packaging (though
judging from their website they seem to be quite a visual band), just the
tunes. They play a punky brand of metal, not too unlike some Meatmen or Gang
Green stuff. Songs like “I’m Fuckin Your Bitch” and “(She’s) Asian And Anal”
will get all the scumbags singin along with their beers in the air. And what
degenerate couldn’t love a song (complete with fake emo intro) with a title like
“Girls Who Fall For Emo Boys Are Braindead Retards”? Their cover of El Duce’s
obscure solo tune “Bad Taste In Men” not only proves that these guys know their
shit, it rocks hard too. If this sounds like your cup of tea (more like bottle
of malt liquor), check out their website for some free MP3s and get your hands
on a copy of this.

Heard
a lot of hype on this band in the past year or so, but never heard more than a
few songs which I thought were good, but didn’t blow me away. Saw them live in
Chicago in the middle of the afternoon and picked up this single when I saw it
at My Minds Eye. Really wasn’t expecting it to be this fucking good. The
A-Side is the title track, and it’s about as perfect as a punk rock single can
get. Forceful right off the bat with the scream “I AM HOMICIDE! GO”.
Alternating male and female vocals screaming about stabbing people in alleys.
B-side has 2 covers – Wire and Thee Headcoats, though I never would have guessed
they were covers if I hadn’t read that in other reviews. Both solid as well,
especially their take on “He’s So Popular” by Thee Headcoats. These guys sort
of get lumped in with the artsy-punk/garage type scene (possibly due to one of
the members also playing in the Baseball Furies) but I don’t really see it. I
suppose people feel a need to label them something since the phrase “punk” has
become diluted beyond all meaning, but really these 3 songs are nothing but punk
rock in a pure and nasty form.

Venomous
Concept is a band of all-stars. Shane Embury (Napalm Death), Kevin Sharp
(Brutal Truth), Buzz Osborne (Melvins), and Danny Herrara (oops....I forgot).
Their website lets you know what their stance is...."FUCK OFF". Even some of the
lyrics are in this vein. That's not to say lyrically there's nothing of merit.
In fact, there are some good political thoughts expressed here. Given the
material put out by these guys from their previous bands, I knew this was going
to be a good kick in the groin, as well. Elements of grind, punk, and occasional
hints of stoner rock come out full force sparing no one in its path. Songs like
"Anti-social", "Infest", "Total Recall", and "Oink!" are all shredders, and
leave you no time to catch your breath. Excellent aggressive musicianship
accompanied by screaming pissed off vocals. This kind of music makes me happy!
And if you don't like it, I'm sure Venomous Concept has 2 words for you. (Mike

This release,
what can one say? It’s a mind-blowing mix of neo cock rock and 80s hair metal.
The Wildhearts did an amazing job blending hard-hitting guitar riffs with lyrics
the likes of which you’d hear in any working class bar where the jukebox is
filled to the brim with Bon Jovi, Journey and Warrant. ‘The Wildhearts Must Be
Destroyed’ goes on a huge power trip with a thick guitar sound and excellent
vocalization. As strange (and frightening) as that might sound, this album rips.
It’s like the dirty rock n roll you’ve been hearing, but cleaned up. It’s like
Turbonegro if Turbonegro stopped singing about gay sex with boys, and switched
to writing about fucking hot bitches in their hotel rooms. After all, what else
would you expect from a band that tears into their first track with fuzzed
vocals and a shattering drumbeat and then promptly blasts into some tasty riffs?
The Wildhearts finally end the album with a hero’s theme, repeating, “You don’t
get no view like you do at the top of the world”. (Andy Knox)
