No Compliance, Big
Fuckin’ Skull, The Uppertanks, and Crack Your Fuckin’ Skull
The Rockwood Subs &
Suds
08-15-04
Yet another Cleveland area punk show where band members
outnumbered the audience. It’s not too bad when all the bands are locals,
but in this case No Compliance and Big Fuckin’ Skull were from Minnesota, so
I feel a little bad for them. But hey, that’s the glamorous life of a
touring punk rock band.
Anyway, locals Crack Your Fuckin’ Skull started the
evening off with a raw, energetic set of hardcore. One drunk guy thought it
would be a good idea to slam dance despite the fact that everyone else was
sitting down, and ran around in a circle with fists flailing wildly. He was
apparently real impressed by CYFS, and left shortly after their set. I was
fairly impressed, too. No final judgment at this time, but I’ll try to
check this band out again.
The Uppertanks hit the stage next, banging out thirty
minutes of party punk. You’ve heard it all before, and if it’s your thing,
you’ll probably dig hearing The Uppertanks play it for you again. The band
is good, but the material is kinda’ generic.
Then, Big Fuckin’ Skull did their thing. 30 minutes of
Misfits style punk where the chorus to every song has the word “skull” in
it. The main problem with their set was the PA couldn’t quite do the job.
You could hear the vocals, but not at the level they should have been. Not
bad, though, and the sort of silliness I’m likely to look into more.
No Compliance closed the evening with some more by the
numbers punk rock. This band gives me more or less the same feeling I have
about The Uppertanks. Nice guys, good musicians, but none of the material
interests me. (Bob Ignizio)
