Cobra Verde with Kiddo and The Bedroom Legends

The Grog Shop

04-19-03

I got to the Grog towards the end of The Bedroom Legends opening set, so not a lot to say about them.  What I heard sounded good, though.  Kiddo played next.  They had a catchy cutesy alterna pop sound.  Not really my thing, but the band sounded good for the style and a few audience members were dancing along as they played.  Good drummer, too.

This was the CD release party for Cobra Verde’s new CD ‘Easy Listening’.  The group started with a rockin’ rendition of “Underpants”, an old Easter Monkey’s song.  Joining the band on guitar (and drums on one song) was J. Mascis, formerly of Dinosaur Jr.  Although Mascis stayed in the background on stage, his distinctive lead playing made his presence known.  Cobra Verde are often referred to as a glam band (in the seventies sense of the term) and that’s certainly a part of their sound.  But there’s an edgier side to them as well, probably more inspired by The Stooges and The Velvet Underground.  After a good set drawn mostly from the new CD during which vocalist John Petkovic tossed Easter candy and cans of Black Label beer to audience members the band left the stage, only to return for an encore of The Stooges “Loose” and “T.V. Eye”.   (Bob Ignizio)
