Keelhaul, Amps II
Eleven, and Uncle Scratch’s Gospel Revival
Peabody’s
03-31-03
Got in a little late for this show, so I missed openers
Carrion and Pankration. Uncle Scratch was just starting into “I Banged a
Sinner” as I arrived, and I joined the crowd gathered to watch them play
their gospel garage rock off in their own “devil free zone” area of the
club. Uncle Scratch played between each band, and delivered a fun show that
included the dangerous handling of venomous rubber snakes.
Amps II Eleven took the main stage with a rousing
version of Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak” before launching into some of their own
seventies rock inspired originals. Of course this is a different decade,
and Amps upped the speed and energy level accordingly. Between songs
bassist Tony Erba provided sarcastic stage banter. Most of the crowd seemed
to dig ‘em, as did I.
Around midnight headliners Keelhaul took the stage for
a set of mostly instrumental progressive hard rock. Sort of like King
Crimson playing metal. The guys are incredibly good musicians, and
bassist/vocalist Aaron Dallison has a great stage presence. Although the
crowd had dwindled somewhat by the end of their set, those still in
attendance were enthusiastic enough to bring the band back for an encore.
All in all it was a great night of Northeast Ohio rock from several
different genres. (Bob Ignizio)
