Frightvision 2003

The Holiday Inn Holidome

03-29-03

I’m a die hard horror fan, so of course I had to go to this.  I attended on Saturday, which was day 2 of the convention, and aside from a few gripes had a pretty good time.  There was a great line-up of guests signing autographs and in some cases giving talks and appearing on panels, including Linda Blair, Traci Lords, Julie  (Catwoman) Newmar, Gil (Buck Rogers) Gerard, Erin Gray, Robert Z’dar, director J.R. Bookwalter (The Dead Next Door) and Tom Savini.  There were also horror hosts like The Son of Ghoul, lots of aspiring scream queens, Ed Douglas of Midnight Syndicate, and Utter Trash interview subjects Speedfreak Productions.  They were there selling copies of their films including ‘Midnight Skater’, which now includes a blurb from my review on the back.  I feel like a real critic now.

There was plenty of temptation in the dealers’ room, but unfortunately it was tough to get through at times.  This was a problem at last year’s Frightvision as well, and I had hoped the change in hotels would have fixed that.  Sadly it was just as bad.  Please, next show try to leave enough space for you attendees to walk.  Some guests were mixed into this clusterfuck, and people waiting in line to talk to them and/or get an autograph would create jams in the aisles.  Other guests were in a quite spacious lobby area that could have accommodated at least a few more of the celebs.  It would have helped to have all the guests out in this area.  Maybe there was a reason that wasn’t done but hopefully future cons will get these kind of logistics worked out.  My complaints aside, I still had a good time.  I scored some hard to find DVDs and talked to some cool people whose work I enjoy.  I only stayed about four hours, but there was plenty of other stuff to check out well into the wee hours of the night, including movies and live bands like The King Dapper Combo and Gein and the Graverobbers.  (Bob Ignizio)
