WJCU Metal Benefit Concert with Ground
Zero, Zone Eleven, Burn Blue Sky, and Hydra
The Revolution
03-28-03
Plenty of folks showed up to show their support for
Cleveland college radio and to hear some kick ass metal. All the money
collected at the door went towards 88.7 FM WJCU’s radiothon, and those in
attendance were also treated to four good area bands.
This was only Hydra’s second ever gig, but they sounded
pretty tight and had good stage presence. The band combined classic
and modern hard rock and soulful melodic vocals for an interesting and
original sound. Although a broken bass string caused some problems,
overall the band did a good job warming up the crowd.
Burn Blue Sky was up next. To my ears they
sounded similar to Down and Acid Bath, blending doomy stoner rock with a
touch of death metal and hardcore. Kind of angry and ugly and mournful
and depressing all at once, but in a good way. It wasn’t pretty but it
rocked.
Featuring the former guitarists from Shok Paris and
Purgatory, Zone Eleven played a high energy set of metal influenced by the
likes of Maiden and Queensryche. Good musicianship all around, good
vocals, and good songs to boot. Trad and power metal fans should
definitely check these guys out.
Ground Zero finished off the evening with yet another
good set of homegrown metal. Their sound was somewhere between classic
metal and thrash, and the vocalist reminded me a bit of Dave Mustaine with a
better attitude. To trot out an old cliché, all in all this was a good
show for a good cause and it was great to see a decent crowd turn out to
support Cleveland college radio and local music. (Bob Ignizio)
