Formula pop punk
for a saturated market. It's tough to say that I really don't like this album,
because I don't completely HATE it. It's just that this sort of music is
completely played out and tired. 40 Watt Domain play the kind of music that
would appeal to a Green Day/Blink 182 crowd with one major problem: They seem to
be old enough to be that demographics parents rather than their favorite band.
"What does that have to do with the music?", you may ask. Really, nothing. In
fact, the songs that the band puts out have pretty good catchy melodies, but
there is NOTHING NEW added to this genre. After listening to ‘Short Wave’, it
is pretty apparent that this band has a long future ahead of them of playing
frat parties. What more could you ask for?!? (Mr. Lee)
No frills punk
from a bunch of grrly grrrls. I really can't tell you much about Bunny Five
Coat other than they are girls. I tried to check out their website, but it was
down at the time of writing. What I can tell you is that their album "Beauty
Myth" is a collection of songs that is a definite throw back to 80's punk with a
tip of the hat to L7. These 9 songs are straight ahead punk, meaning that they
aren't breaking any new ground, but it sure can be a lot of fun. The quality of
the recording could be better, making the disc hard to listen to at times, but
Bunny Five Coat's attitude makes up for that. (Mr. Lee)
Lil'
Pocket Knife is a pretty interesting group. Comprised of 3 members, Lil' Pocket
Knife on vocals, No Skills on drums, and George on keytar, they have a sound
that combines Peaches, Roxanne Shante, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Bikini Kill.
They do this blending of styles very well. On their 5 song EP ‘Pants Control’,
they get glitchy with electronic music, dirty with rapping, and noisy with their
instruments. Notable highlights are "Disco Dancer" and the keyboard crazy "Red
Hott", in which they boast "Betcha didn't know George can sing." Well, he can't
really, but it works. This a fun record that is worth checking into. It's also
going to be cool to see what they bring on a full length album, because if this
EP is any indication, it's gonna be pretty sweet. (Eddie Fleisher)
Warrior
‘The Wars of Gods and Men’ (Reality Entertainment)
While not a huge fan of power
metal there are a few bands I do like: Gamma Ray, Helloween, and Warrior come to
mind. But remember, I'm not a huge power metal fan, so this review will be as
honest as I can get it. The stuff I like on the CD: There's a lot of the old
80's metal sound, which is always a reason for a plus sign. The lyrics at least
strive for something positive rather than Satan, gore, or vikings fighting with
swords to take over magical kingdoms. I always respect a band with something to
say. The best songs are the title track, "Never Live Your Life Again", and
"Love Above All". These are good solid metal songs that bring ya back in time.
What I don't like is the commercialization of some of the songs. Not heavy
enough for me, I guess. "Do It Now", and "Salvation" really get on my nerves,
as they sound like Motley Crue, and I would rather have a knife stabbed in my
knees for an hour than listen to that crap. I like my metal manly!! I guess on
a scale of 1-10 I'd give this at least a 5 or 6 because the majority of the
music is "Heavy". Last I'd heard Rob Rock was singing for them, but I guess
that was shortlived. Oh well! Take this as you will. (Mike Salamone)
